A young man was backpacking through Sumatra, hiking volcanos, treking through jungles in search of orangutans. His trip was cut short when an earthquake struck the town he was staying in. Already destabilised by the 8.4 magnitude quake, he feared his hotel would topple that night whilst he was asleep on the top floor. When the sun rose in the morning the earthquake gave a death rattle, squeezing out one final tremor. The man awoke to his bed shaking and jumped to his feet fearing the hotel would fall in a heap, burying him alive. Fortunately, the tremor stopped and the man survived to tell the tale. Unfortunately, when he returned home he began to experience heightened stress and anxiety. He was hyper vigilant to his surroundings, making sure he was near an exit when in a building at all times, just in case an earthquake hit (despite the unlikely event that an earthquake would hit Sydney). These symptoms he later learned were post traumatic stress symptoms.
Unfortunately, there is a relatively high probability (60-80%) that you will experience a potentially traumatic event in your life. Stress is an unavoidable fact of life. It may not be a natural disaster but rather a death, an accident, or chronic work related stress. It may have been trauma suffered during childhood, including physical, emotional, or sexual abuse.
Stress and trauma can lead to a variety of psychological, social, and occupational problems including:
- Physical and emotional abuse
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
The Stress & Trauma Centre is a newly designed clinic that balances the rigorous mental and emotional work of therapy with natural light and soothing decor, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation.
