About the Stress and Trauma Centre

Talking to a professional can be helpful when you are feeling stuck in life. Our psychologists can help you develop ways to break out of the cycles that are proving unhelpful and develop alternative coping strategies. We offer evidence-based, tailor-made and integrative therapies for anxiety, depression, trauma, low self-esteem, and more. There are various approaches that our psychologists use, from CBT to Schema Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, so it is worth considering which is most suitable for you and find a psychologist with whom you feel comfortable.

Dedicated to helping you build a better life

With Aristotle’s guiding maxim in mind, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”, Dr Nick Marsden established Marsden Clinical Psychology in 2013 as a holistic, diverse and community-based mental health service, in the heart of the Illawarra region.

Today, Marsden Clinical Psychology is a dedicated team of + 20 experts and support staff who have been working in the field of psychological and neuropsychological services for over 20 years. Focused on our local community and its constant evolving needs, our approach has always been to research problems within the community, assess individual needs and develop action-oriented community-based programs, while taking up the challenge of keeping up to date with the best practices, assessment tools and latest discoveries in the field.

Because we value and respect the needs of our community and actively seek feedback on our services, we have recently made some changes at Marsden Psychology. We have taken steps to move toward two specialised mental health clinics: the Kids Clinic and the Stress and Trauma Centre.

Our Stress and Trauma Centre is located in the health hub of Corrimal, a central location for those in both the northern and southern suburbs of the Illawarra, and within reach of Campbelltown and Sutherland Shire, focuses on adolescent and adult mental health and well being. It was born from the idea that many of our mental health concerns are stress related, and quite often, past traumas have played a role in the ongoing mental health problems that we experience. Dr. Nick Marsden explains:

Our Approach

“As a psychologist that helps adults to overcome a wide range of difficulties, it seemed that ‘Stress & Trauma’ was a fitting title for our clinic because many mental health problems are connected in some way to these things. Stress often exacerbates our mental health problems, or sets off a cascade of psychological difficulties; and often, our experiences in childhood play an important role in the recurring problems we face in adulthood, even if these experiences in childhood seem innocuous. Our approach at the Stress & Trauma Centre is to ensure we help adults to overcome their struggles for the long-term. We are not into ‘quick fixes’. We want to ensure that people experience meaningful and lifelong changes.”

What to expect

Making your first appointment

Once you’ve decided to try therapy, call our kind and caring admin team on (02) 9139 0126 to discuss what you are having difficulty with and book your first appointment.

Attending the initial consultation

In the initial consultation, your therapist is looking to build a picture of how you’ve come to where you are today and what you are looking to get out of therapy. Your therapist will do their best to address any questions or concerns you may have about the process.

Creating a treatment plan together

Over the first three sessions, your therapist will work collaboratively with you to establish goals for therapy. They are designed to be specific, realistic, and tailored to your needs.

Undergoing therapy

As your therapy goes on, you will continue the process of building a trusting relationship with your therapist. You will work with them to find alternative ways of thinking and behaving, build resilience and learn new skills that will help to see yourself and the world differently, and promote helpful actions in life.
