Carina is a dedicated Developmental Educator known for her caring, person-centred and proactive approach. She is committed to empowering and educating parents, building their capacity to support their children effectively. Her work is also focused on understanding the functions of behaviour, fostering self-determination, and developing self-advocacy skills. She takes a human rights approach that harnesses a person’s unique strengths so that individuals can take meaningful steps towards a better quality of life. Carina’s values and experience are reflected in her involvement in organizing the Neurodivergence Conference at the University of Wollongong in 2024, featuring keynote speaker Grace Tame. Her expertise enables her to provide comprehensive support tailored to each individual’s needs, enhancing their ability to thrive both at home and in their broader communities.

From a young age, Carina was drawn to working with children. After completing her Diploma in Children’s Services straight out of high school, she began her career in early childhood education. Her journey took a pivotal turn when she became a parent and was first introduced to speech therapy and the world of special needs. Navigating these challenges for her son while continuing her work in early childhood deepened her commitment to advocacy. When her second son was born, Carina had to advocate even more vigorously to ensure he received the necessary support. Feeling let down by the system, she sought better ways to support her children and found Dr. Amanda Webster, who introduced her to the Graduate Certificate in Autism. This experience broadened her perspective and inspired her to seek greater career fulfillment. By 2019, after 18 years in early childhood and feeling burnt out, Carina took a leap of faith and applied for a position at Marsden Psychology, despite not having completed her Master’s Degree. This decision marked a transformative moment in her career, allowing her to embrace her authentic self and find her true calling as a developmental educator.

Carina’s personality is warm and grounded, with a deep love for spending quality time with her family. Outside of work, she values relaxation and quality time with her family, often enjoying TV shows with her husband and engaging in various activities with her two boys. She draws inspiration from neurodivergent advocates such as Em Rusciano and has a personal goal of visiting her Danish exchange student and his family in Denmark during the Christmas season, reflecting her enthusiasm for meaningful experiences and connections.
